A ~$14 billion dollar leading retailer of office products and services provides its 15,000+ products through its 1000+ retails stores and 30+ ecommerce sites. Their products include general office supplies, technology products and office furniture. With over $3.1 billion in online sales, the world's number three Internet retailer was looking for a DNS solution that would help them achieve 100% uptime for all of their online properties and provide them with the ability to scale their DNS infrastructure rapidly to meet the customer demands.
Enterprise Challenge
The company’s current BIND DNS infrastructure was unable to scale leading to continual issues/outages. The DNS change process was time consuming and error prone resulting in DNS propagation delays. The company was concerned of the single point of failure that existed during data propagation. When one name server fails or is simply unreachable by the other server, the propagation of their website zone information can fail and cause downtime – which was unacceptable to the company.
The UltraDNS Solution
The company migrated its DNS management on to the UltraDNS directory infrastructure by subscribing to its Managed External DNS Service.
- UltraDNS provided the customer with an advanced management interface designed to support a number of different usage patterns. It’s error-checking modules and security mechanisms ensured the integrity of all zone configurations.
- The customer is able to make changes directly through the interface and have those changes propagated in real time throughout the UltraDNS network. In addition, UltraDNS provided the customer with advanced reporting tools and reports that illustrate important information about network traffic and source IP – statistics that BIND cannot produce.
- The Managed DNS Service also addressed the customer’s concern regarding secure and immediate data propagation. Because UltraDNS leverages advanced replicating technology, all systems communicate with each other and ensure that all have the proper and most up to date information, thus eliminating any single point of failure.
