.Name Selects UltraDNS

Global Name Registry, Responsible For Top Level-Domain .name, Leverages UltraDNS' Carrier-Class, Full Fail-Over DNS Service To Deliver Global Digital Identity Platform

SAN MATEO, Calif. November 12, 2001 -- UltraDNS™ Corporation, the leading Directory Infrastructure Services Provider (DISP), which guarantees mission-critical directory reliability and performance, today announced the second deployment of its Domain Name System (DNS) platform to support an ICANN-approved top-level domain. Global Name Registry, the operator of newly approved top level-domain (TLD) .name, selected UltraDNS to resolve all DNS queries ending in .name. UltraDNS' carrier-class, 100 percent fail-safe outsourced DNS infrastructure solution will guarantee the fast and reliable resolution of all .name domains when Global Name Registry rolls out its new TLD on January 15, 2002. Users who visit any .name Web site (e.g. www.john.doe.name) will reach those sites with substantially better speed and reliability when compared to domains supported by traditional DNS infrastructure.

The agreement with Global Name Registry marks the second ICANN-approved TLD to rely upon UltraDNS' directory infrastructure to manage their DNS needs. The .tv Corporation, the exclusive source for Web addresses ending in .tv, already utilizes UltraDNS' directory infrastructure solutions to bulletproof their DNS, and UltraDNS will continue to work to provide solutions that help meet the needs of other ICANN-sanctioned TLD operators.

"We are pleased that Global Name Registry selected our carrier-class global DNS platform and Managed DNS Service to help power their top-level domain. Their decision validates our effort to provide the world's most reliable DNS infrastructure and help companies such as Global Name Registry deliver outstanding service to their customers and the millions of users who will visit .name Web sites," said Ben Petro, CEO and president of UltraDNS. "We believe that .name is one of the most relevant new extensions, as it offers a global identifier that can accommodate a variety of next-generation offerings, such as converged Internet and telephony services."

UltraDNS' directory infrastructure and Managed DNS ServiceTM is the first fully integrated, outsourced service for the Internet's Domain Name System (DNS) that is designed to ensure Internet users and application connections are always available and always correct.

"When we were chosen by ICANN to operate the .name TLD, we knew BIND wouldn't provide the level of reliability and security. We needed industry-leading DNS infrastructure that was guaranteed. UltraDNS' directory infrastructure meets that criteria and will keep .name domains secure and available. The fact that .name sites will, from the very beginning, have the most robust, secure and reliable directory infrastructure only shows the commitment Global Name Registry has to delivering cutting edge service to our customers," said Geir Rasmussen, CTO and executive director of Global Name Registry.

The performance and reliability of the DNS system is vital to a Top Level Domain like .name as DNS forms the first link in the chain of events that connect an Internet user to a Web site. By translating the name typed into a browser (www.john.doe.name) to an IP address (112.34.567.88), DNS touches virtually every Internet transaction. UltraDNS, through its advanced directory services platform and Managed DNS Service, delivers 100 percent reliable DNS, backed by a full service level guarantee (SLA).
