ULTRADNS PROVIDES INTERNATIONAL DOMAIN NAME (IDN) INFRASTRUCTURE SUPPORTThe leading provider of DNS Infrastructure to the Top Level Domain (TLD) community is unique in its ability to support both 8-bit & Punycode for Internationalized Domain Names BRISBANE, Calif., May 6, 2004 -- UltraDNS Corporation, the leading provider of DNS infrastructure for the Top Level Domain (TLD) community, today announced that its industry-leading Managed DNS ServiceT is now capable of supporting International Domain Names (IDNs) within its Directory Platform. IDNs are domain names or Web addresses, represented by local language characters. This announcement further strengthens the position of UltraDNS as the leading provider of DNS infrastructure for the TLD community. Every Top Level Domain extension requires its own DNS infrastructure to enable domain resolution. UltraDNS currently provides DNS solutions to over 25 generic and country-code TLDs with its industry leading Managed DNS Service, including .org, .info and .uk. Increasingly, TLDs have sought to outsource their DNS infrastructure, allowing them to focus on new revenue opportunities such as IDN, which opens new market segments for this essential technology vertical. Service providers have historically utilized 8-bit character code to address the technical issue of resolving a domain name in its native language. However, the 8-bit solution achieved limited adoption as the technical requirements for implementation were significant and domain resolution proved to be inconsistent. To address this limitation, the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) recently adopted an IDN standard using Punycode, which uniquely and reversibly transforms a Unicode string into an ASCII string. The UltraDNS platform can support both legacy 8-bit and Punycode server-side IDN characters via a single lookup. The service is available immediately and can be seamlessly integrated with the TLD registry infrastructure. "Top Level Domain registries must respond to the demands from their user communities to enhance network reliability, expand geographic footprint and provide additional functionality," said Ben Petro, president and CEO, UltraDNS. "By being the first provider to offer a truly ubiquitous IDN solution, UltraDNS is enabling yet another milestone in the evolution of the Internet infrastructure." UltraDNS' Managed DNS Service is built on the Company's Directory Services Platform - a combination of patented, proprietary technologies and innovations that together deliver leading-edge reliability, availability, performance and security. A cornerstone of the Directory Service Platform is its flexibility, in that it is both query and protocol agnostic. "UltraDNS has architected a protocol agnostic platform that enables our Managed DNS Service to respond to any request, be it Punycode, 8-bit or any other form of DNS query," explains Rodney Joffe, Chairman and CTO, UltraDNS. "Consequently, UltraDNS is uniquely positioned within the industry to handle multiple 8-bit variances, and able to respond rapidly to developments within the TLD market."
