Forwarding FAQs
What is URL Forwarding?
The URL Forwarding service allows you to direct Web traffic from one hosted domain to any other website on the Internet.
What is Email Forwarding?
The Email Forwarding service allows you to direct mail sent to addresses at a hosted domain name to email addresses anywhere else on the Internet. For example, you can forward mail to a Hotmail or Yahoo account, the email account at your ISP or any other email account you choose.
Can I sign up for Email or URL Forwarding without UltraDNS Managed DNS service?
No. Use of the Managed DNS Service is necessary to provide forwarding services to our customers.
When I use URL forwarding, what URL will a visitor see in their browser address box?
That depends on whether or not you select the "framed" option when setting up URL Forwarding. If you select the framed option, the visitor will only see the original domain in his or her address bar. If you leave this option unchecked, the user will see the address to which he or she has been forwarded.
For example, if you are forwarding your URL to a site like Tripod or an AOL home page, you will more than likely want to use the framed option. If you are forwarding your URL to another domain (e.g., forwarding a misspelling of your domain name to the correct spelling), you will probably not want to use the framed option.
Can I forward different directories within a domain to different URLs?
Yes.
Can I forward different sub-domains to different URLs?
Yes.
How do I use Email Forwarding for one mailbox going to multiple recipients?
If you have one email address and you want it to forward to several different addresses, you simply add one new forwarding entry for each different address. A copy of the email will be sent to each.
Do wildcards work with Email Forwarding?
Wildcards (defined by the "*" symbol) will cause all email sent to the domain to forward to the address you specify. This does not affect any other assignments you create for the domain, For example, if you create a forwarding record for "sales@thisdomain.com" to go to "ben@thatdomain.com" AND set up a wild card for the domain (*@thisdomain.com), it will not override the forwarding set up for the sales alias.
