Managed DNS FAQs
Does NeuStar reserve or register domain names?
NeuStar does not provide Domain Name Registration services. Please visit our Registration Partners page, where you can proceed to register new domain names and configure these names to utilize UltraDNS Managed DNS Services.
Does the Managed DNS Service package include Web hosting?
The UltraDNS Managed DNS Service does not provide Web hosting services. However, our Managed DNS Service package does allow you to host your domain virtually anywhere and to "tell the Internet" where to find your domain.
I signed up for service, but have not yet received the activation code. What did I do wrong?
The activation code should be delivered to you via email. If your email servers are operational and you are receiving other email properly, the address may have been mistyped during your registration process. Please call our support department at (888) 367-4820 so that we can help you resolve this issue.
Can I have my email forwarded?
Yes, if you sign up for our Email Forwarding service, your email can be forwarded to any email address you select. For more information on our Email Forwarding product, please contact support@UltraDNS.com or sales@UltraDNS.com.
Is it possible for me to catch all email addresses for my domain?
You are able to use wildcard entries with our Email Forwarding product to catch all email addresses from a specific domain. For more information on our Email Forwarding product, please contact support@UltraDNS.com or sales@UltraDNS.com.
A CNAME redirects all traffic to one hostname (www.mydomain.com) to another hostname (www.someprovider.net). It will not redirect to or from a subdirectory (‘/mydomain’); that requires our URL Forwarding product, which is not a part of the base Managed DNS Service package. For information on our URL Forwarding product, please contact support@UltraDNS.com or sales@UltraDNS.com.
I forgot my password. How do I get another one?
On the login screen at http://www.UltraDNS.com, there is a link to retrieve your account and password information. Your information will be emailed to the address you used to sign up for your Managed DNS Service package.
What will happen if I use incorrect contact information?
Since NeuStar may need to contact you regarding the administration or billing of your account, it is required that you use accurate information when creating your account. You will also be unable to retrieve lost usernames and/or passwords if you fail to provide an accurate email address. Furthermore, if your billing information is inaccurate and we cannot process your account as a result, your account's creation may be delayed or even denied.
If I already have my domain registered, how do I transfer my existing domain?
If you are setting up secondary-only name services, a zone transfer will be performed automatically within 30 minutes of registration, providing that the name server hosting your domain allows us to do so. This will enter all your domain/zone information for you. Please note that secondary services will not work properly until we are able to execute regular zone transfers from your servers. The person responsible for your DNS administration will need to configure this. If you are transferring primary DNS services to your Managed DNS Service account, you can configure your zone manually using the web-based management console. Alternatively, you can perform a zone transfer or upload a BIND file. To perform a zone transfer, go to the “Add a Domain” page, enter the hostname and then, in the “Zone Transfer” field, enter the IP address of the name server that currently holds your zone files. To upload a BIND file, enter the hostname and then click on the “Browse” button next to the “Load A Zone File” field and select a BIND file to upload.
Do you support IPv6?
Our back-end server software already supports IPv6. All systems will be set up to handle IPv6 if and when it becomes a widely adopted standard on the Internet.
Is there a limit to how many zones a user can manage?
No. The Managed DNS Service uses a highly scalable architecture and can handle a near-infinite number of zones.
How do I set up my domain with regard to hosts, MX records and name servers?
This is a common question, but is unfortunately beyond the scope of these FAQs. Entire books have been written on the subject and are generally the best place to start looking to learn more about DNS. The most common reference that the UltraDNS staff uses for this information is "DNS and BIND" (Fourth Edition, O'Reilly, Paul Albitz & Cricket Liu, ISBN 0596001584).
How do I delete zones?
From the Domain/Zone Management screen, click on the check box next to the domain you wish to remove. At the bottom right you will see an option entitled “Update All”. By clicking this, you will remove the zone from the UltraDNS system.
What is the BIND version number?
Our DNS management system uses its own custom server-side software to provide DNS services. It is a completely different code base than BIND. Therefore, BIND version numbers are not relevant.
Can the Managed DNS Service handle reverse (IP-to-name) lookups?
Yes. However, there are many restrictions on PTR/reverse lookup delegations, and it is recommended that anyone attempting to configure this using our service take a look at the pointer section of the "DNS Overview" located on this website.
What DNS servers will my domain need to be set up for in order to use the service?
Domain servers in listed order:
UDNS1.ULTRADNS.NET |
204.69.234.1 |
UDNS2.ULTRADNS.NET |
204.74.101.1 |
From what address will zone transfers come when setting up secondary service?
Zone transfers are currently requested by 204.74.97.10, 156.154.63.122, 156.154.63.123, 204.74.97.97, 204.74.100.11 or 204.74.100.12.
What is zone transfer access control, and how do I use it?
Zone transfer access control allows you to control which hosts on the Internet have permission to request all available information about your zone or domain. In many applications, allowing any savvy user on the Internet to get a complete "road map" of your zone can have security implications. The default behavior is to deny anyone to perform a zone transfer. You can enable zone transfer access control by going to the permissions tab within the Managed DNS interface and entering an IP address range (or a list of IP addresses ranges) to which zone transfer will be allowed.
Is there a size limit to the zone files?
Aside from practical manageability limitations, there is no hard limit on zone file size.
Can the Managed DNS Service operate as a secondary-only name server and execute zone transfers from my primary?
Yes. The Management Console's domain setup wizard will walk you through this process. We accept standard TTL-based zone transfers and NOTIFY-based zone transfers. (See the FAQ above that discusses the addresses of the servers that will initiate zone transfers.)
Does the Managed DNS Service system handle wildcard entries? If so, what fields support them?
Address (A) and Mail Exchanger (MX) records support wildcard entries as follows: To set up your domain so that mail for anyhost.yourdomain.com gets delivered to your mail exchanger, enter "*.yourdomain.com" as an MX record. To set up your domain so that address lookups for anyhost.yourdomain.com resolve to a particular server, enter "*.yourdomain.com" as an A record in the hosts section.
How do I set up third-level domain names (sub-domains) for my domain?
Set up each third-level domain as a separate zone apart from your second-level domain. This will allow you to manage each one individually, as well as assign privilege levels to each third-level domain. Otherwise, the setup is the same as any regular second-level domain.
Can I get telnet access to my domain or set up a mailing list?
All of these features rely solely on the hosting computer or service for your domain. The Managed DNS Service provides only the DNS record outsourcing for your domain and does not have control over what services your web space provider may offer. We recommend you check with your provider for more information about what is available.
Are any recursive DNS services offered?
Yes, we currently provide Recursive DNS Service. please contact support@UltraDNS.com or sales@UltraDNS.com.
I read that your service is supposed to make use of several servers all over the world, but you only give users two server addresses to provide to their registrar. How do I make use of all the other servers?
The two server addresses you supply your registrar when you set up a domain on the UltraDNS system are actually “virtual” addresses that will route to the best possible server on our network (based on a number of factors). This highly intelligent mechanism allows you to achieve full redundancy and reliability with only two name server addresses actually listed. In fact, if the registrar would allow you to do so, you could achieve the same level of reliability with only one name server address.
