Speed and accuracy for efficient DNS management.
Every day, our UltraDNS platform handles billions of DNS queries quickly and correctly, setting the bar for increased performance.

BGP and IP Anycast

UltraDNS was the first to use IP Anycast to answer DNS requests, utilizing multiple machines to advertise a single public IP address. Then we raised our game by pairing it with BGP routing.

Most DNS queries worldwide are transported via User Data Protocol. UDP, however, can’t guarantee delivery. By combining IP Anycast and BGP routing, UltraDNS routes DNS packets to the closest, most available location. This means faster resolution, fewer dropped DNS queries and more efficient routing resulting in fewer bottlenecks.

Resolver and Replication

Our resolver is the brains behind UltraDNS, the software that resolves DNS queries. Developed (and patented) as an alternative to BIND, its platform is closed and thus more secure, plus highly scalable and redundant. It supports standard DNS specifications and RFCs, plus we’ve enhanced it with numerous proprietary technologies. This brings you capacity and redundancy that legacy DNS servers can’t match. Besides supporting TLD (top-level domain) traffic, the Ultra resolver also supports SLD (second-level domain) traffic.

Our replication technology meets one of the biggest challenges in DNS management: timely propagation of changes across the Internet. When a change is made on our DNS network, that change will be reflected throughout the Web in less than five minutes, with many nodes updated within 30 seconds.

DNS Real-Time Directory
Today’s domain name system (DNS) has no central management. If a DNS entry is outdated or incorrect, updates can take as long as 24 hours—a sure way to lose customers and revenue. So we decided to invent the DNS Real-Time Directory to solve this nagging problem. Put simply, the directory collects updated DNS entries and sends them to all recursive DNS servers, directing them to clear their caches and add the newest data. Bottom line: Your entries are correct, your site is available and you’re open for business.

DNS Shield for DNS Protection
Here’s another way we give you extra speed and DNS protection. Our DNS Shield lets ISPs like Yahoo!, EarthLink and AOL connect their recursive servers directly to our network. When ISPs participate, we deploy authoritative DNS servers within their gateway networks. This creates a hardened, highly secure DNS infrastructure. Your queries are quickly resolved in a trusted environment with the most advanced protection against cyber attacks. We propagate your zones and resolve all DNS queries mere milliseconds away from the recursive servers that send them.

Bottom line: Just to survive, let alone thrive, smaller businesses need a complete Web infrastructure that is stable, scalable and secure. And it begins at the very first point of contact between vendor and customer: DNS, or Domain Name System.
